I listened to the Carpenters songs all weekend. I could listen to Karen Carpenter sing simply forever. I wish she could have beaten her anorexia as I beat mine.
Funny, at the time they were popular, I had no use fer their music, or any music, really, having been brought up so very strictly by parents who greatly disapproved of any but select classical composers. I couldn't even listen to "that peasant Tchaikovsky," and when I dared to wish to listen to pop music I was severely punished and mocked. It was a miserable existence, lil' donkey frens! If I ever have to listen to the "Water Music Suite" again I'll go drown myself in the horse trough.
Now I adore Karen's voice. But how very sad to hear her sing "and when my life is over, remember when we were together..."

Something fer my bloggie frens. Right-click to save this image from the 1940's. I'm going to put it on my sidebar with "I Like My Bloggie Frens" as the caption fer awhile, but I think it would make a cute tag, too.
So sad about Karen C. Her voice was so pure and simple and beautiful. She never was "trying" and her voice just came out like that totally unaffected.
ReplyDeleteAbout the classical... I must dose my kids a few times a week for good measure but still play the pop station too.
Today I asked Ella what she wanted to hear and she said, "Vee-vall-tee." Yep she's requesting Vivaldi!!! :)
I grew up with parents who liked twangy country music and it grates my nerves something fierce to this day, though I like the newer contemporary country fine. When I was working in the 'world of lawyers' I always listened to classical music when I was writing. It was the only way I could keep my mind clear and creative.

ReplyDeleteI love the Carpenters' music, her voice was that of an angel:) I'm so glad you have overcome your childhood and are now such a wonderful, loving gal! I still struggle with issues from mine, but all things considered I think I turned out *OK*, I love the graphic, that could be you & me as children with no adults around!

ReplyDeleteLove the graphic. The use of white is so interesting. My body image issues led me to the other end of the scale and I'm just now starting to get a grip. I have to, I'm starting to suffer the health problems that come with too much sugar, salt and fat! I'm so proud of you for surviving it and sharing it!

ReplyDeleteI love Karen's vice too, I remember when I was a child and there was a movie about buffalos hunt, I guess, and the song was in my mind forever, I can't remember the title, but the line, "bless the beasts and the children", which brings a knot to my throat.

ReplyDeleteHow cruel to withhold contemporary music from your world! I once took a college class on music appreciation. The class was so intense that I called it Music Depreciation. I literally couldn't listen to classical music for a long time afterward.
We listened to all types of music growing up.....love Karen Carpenter....my dad loved country, 40s big bands, Bing Crosby (he was their paperboy as a boy),pop (remember Green Onions?) I didn't discover classical until high school...and do like the Water Music..but well understand your feelings...psst..I am a Mozart fan..

h your folks were really old fashioned.
We were allowed all kinds of music. I being the most musical, played several instruments.
We did not have a record player, so it was the radio for me. We got our tiny tape player when I was in HS, but not many tapes available.
I used to listen to classical music, like it a lot. I 've grown out of Country Music USA on Voice of America, ha-ha.

I like some of the music that we had growing up better now too...for some reason I think Journey is the greatest. Classical is lovely but sometimes my energy gets lifted by something POP. I am so sorry that you have sufferd through anorexia in the past- sure glad it is over- I can't imagine being forced to listen to classical music- I am glad that you have ocercome all of the un pleasantness in you life= you are such a dear sweet person! and the best friend one could have!

The mellowness, and ease of Karen C's voice has never been duplicated, have you ever noticed that? She truly was, one of a kind. Her voice would have gotten richer with age, too bad that we all lost out on that treasure.

ReplyDeleteI always felt a pang on the inside for Karen C. to think that she felt she couldn't find a way free. She had such a gorgeous voice.
I always loved the music of Karen Carpenter, still do. It was such a shame that she ended the way she did. Just goes to show that money and fame does not equate happiness. That popcorn however, sounds delicious! I could go for some of that and I love the graphics too!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite christmas ablum of all time is by the Carpenters....I think Karen Carpenter had the purest voice with perfect pitch than any singer I have ever heard.....I absolutely loved them and still remember the day I heard she had passed away.......:-) Hugs
